Since the dawn of time, urns have been used decoratively and the variety of this design is
infinite. In gardens they have been much used from the Renaissance onwards (please click
on History for more background information). Pictured below are examples taken from the
17th, 18th and 19th centuries. Dr Johnson did not approve of them; “Sir, I hate vases! Would
they were beaten to pieces to pave our streets”
